In January at our Leadership Retreat, Eric Vickery and Shelly Van Epps highlighted that leadership is developed, not innate. Success relies on self-belief, team support, and mental toughness to drive a shared vision.

How many of you were natural born leaders? Raise your hand if you’re a natural born leader.
00:06
So, there are no leaders that come into the world any other way than being born, right? So, it’s all just developing it. And now, raise your hand if you are a leader. Raise your hand if you are a leader. So now, everyone’s raising their hands. Because you lead your kids, you lead your spouse, you definitely lead your spouse, right? Tell him what to do all the time. No, is it the other way around? I can’t remember which way it’s going to go. All right, so.
00:35
What is leadership? So we’re gonna talk about leadership, but I have a question for you, since we’re here at leadership. What is the one most essential characteristic of a business owner? So this is an interesting question. When you guys went to dental school, you probably thought, I wanna go to dental school so that I can be a leader. I wanna lead a group of people, and I wanna develop people, I wanna pour into them. That’s it, right? Probably not it. So.
01:03
What’s the answer to this question? What’s the one most essential characteristic of a business owner? What’s this weekend about? So, leadership skills. Because you could have your MAGD, right? You could be an AACD accredited level dentist, and yet at the same time, you know that you can’t deliver all that without your team. And without the team,
01:33
it’s not going to be, the business is not gonna be at the level of what you want it to be. That would be my guess. So Dave and I actually were sitting around a table decades ago talking to dentists, and what we found out, we said what’s the number one asset you have in your practice? What’s the number one asset you have in your practice? And they all said the team. They said the team, yeah. And then kind of went around a little bit, that was the synopsis, the census. And then we said now what’s,
02:02
What’s the most frustrating thing about your practice? You knew that one a lot quicker than the first one, which is funny. So, I want us to recognize that without the team we’re not getting there, and yet also the frustration of getting our team to help us get there is the roadblock. So, let’s talk about this for a moment. Okay. So, what we’re going to do is,
02:29
We’re going to go around the room in a minute and get you guys introduce yourself, but I do want to say something to you guys.
02:38
There have been plenty of leaders that you are familiar with who had people who didn’t believe in them. About 50% of the country right now would say the last two months went yes or no, right? So there are plenty of people who are not going to believe in you. But we also know this, there has never been any leaders who didn’t believe in themselves. So one of the first things we always work with our teams, our doctors on is,
03:07
what’s the mental toughness part like? Because you are going to be tried, you know this. You’re going to be challenged by your team, you know this. You could have the perfect person in that leadership role until they’re not in that role anymore. And all of a sudden you’re like, wait, they’re loyal until they’re not, right? I mean, I could speak to a lot of your practices and go, okay, you have these great people in these spots and it’s all going well, going well and then they’re not there anymore. I mean, I managed two different practices and I was there until I wasn’t there. So, loyalty, right?
03:36
ownership mentality into that, into what it is your vision is. So I want to be really, really clear with us to say this first. You have to believe in you first. And I’ll keep saying it over and over again. You have to believe in you first. That’s not arrogance or ego or any of that. So we’re going to get into how you, how you not only feel and think and believe here, but how you portray that. Nobody’s following the person who doesn’t believe in themselves. We know this.
04:05
So if you wonder sometimes why it’s not happening the way you want it to happen, you’ve gotta always remember to go back to that core belief of do I believe that I am a leader first?
